In a horrific incident, a couple from Andhra Pradesh’s Madanapalle in Chitoor district allegedly beat their two daughters to death with dumbbells and a trishool in belief that they would be able to bring them back from the dead. The couple, identified as V Padmaja and V Purushotham Naidu, believed that they had special powers and it would help them revive their dead daughters, said police.

As per a News Minute report, Purushotham is an associate professor of Chemistry from Government Degree College in Madanapalle, while Padmaja is a Gold Medallist in MSc Mathematics, and is also the correspondent of Masterminds IIT Talent School in Chitoor. On investigation, the couple told police, “Give us time till the end of the night, we will bring them back.”

The deceased have been identified as Alekya (27) who was a student of the Indian Institute of Forest Management and Sai Divya (22) who was a BBA graduate pursuing a career in music, police said.

The incident came to light on Sunday night after Purushottam informed his colleague about the murders, who in turn contacted the police. According to Divisional Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ravi Manohara Chary, the accused couple were found to be in a mentally disturbed state.

On investigation, neighbours also informed the police that the couple would often perform pujas and a similar ritual took place even on the night of the murders. Police officials also found several ritual items at the site and the victims were found draped in red sarees.

The DSP further added that the family were very devout and said, “They killed their children so that they would live again. The mother beat the children to death and the father present at the time of the incident.”

Though there is speculation that it is a case of human sacrifice, investigating is underway in the case.
