Astronomers Detect X-rays From Uranus For The First Time Using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory!

It has recently come to light that astronomers have detected X-rays from Uranus for the first time, using NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. This discovery will help scientists get more insights into Uranus.

NASA has shared the image and details of this recent discovery on its official NASA Chandra X-ray Observatory Instagram page. The caption for the image states “scientists have detected X-rays from #Uranus for the first time! The seventh planet from the Sun is located about 1.8 billion miles (2.9 billion kilometres) from Earth. What could cause Uranus to emit X-rays?” Ever since its posting, the image has received over 37,000 likes and 200 comments.

NASA reports that the reason behind Uranus emitting the X-rays could be attributed to the sun. Astronomers have observed that both Jupiter and Saturn scatter X-ray light given off by the Sun that’s similar to how Earth’s atmosphere scatters the Sun’s light. “While the authors of the new Uranus study initially expected that most of the X-rays detected would also be from scattering, there are tantalizing hints that at least one other source of X-rays is present. If further observations confirm this, it could have intriguing implications for understanding Uranus,” states NASA.

Furthermore, there’s also a possibility that the rings of Uranus are producing X-rays themselves, which is the case for Saturn’s rings. Given that Uranus is surrounded by charged particles such as electrons and protons in its nearby space environment, these energetic particles can collide with the rings and cause these rings to glow in X-rays. NASA also describes another possibility behind the emission of X-rays and that is from auroras on Uranus.
