Facebook is reportedly working on a new app that bears a strong resemblance to the audio-chatting app Clubhouse. As per reports, Facebook is developing an app similar to Clubhouse and it is in its “early stages of development”. Clubhouse is the first audio-chatting app where people can be invited to listen to conversations, interviews and discussions.
As per New York Times report, Facebook has asked its product team to create an app similar to Clubhouse. The app is in its early stages of development. “We’ve been connecting people through audio and video technologies for many years and are always exploring new ways to improve that experience for people,” Emilie Haskell, a Facebook spokesperson told The NYT.
Interestingly, the reports surfaced days after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg joined Clubhouse along with Tesla supremo Elon Musk.
Facebook is known for either acquiring its competitors or creating products to overshadow its rivals. Facebook has taken over WhatsApp, Instagram, and even Oculus after these apps became increasingly popular among the younger audience. Currently, Clubhouse is being talked about a lot among users.
Clubhouse functions in a unique manner. Just like other apps, you cannot download Clubhouse from the play Store. It is an invite-only app which means you can only join the app when you are invited by an existing user of the app. Once you join, you will be given an option to select your topics of interest. For instance, if you are interested in tech and lifestyle, you can select your topic and the app will show you relevant conversation rooms.
Initially, the existing member of the Clubhouse can only send two invites. If you are invited, you will get a link that would be sent to your phone number. Using the invite link, you can sign-up and enjoy the app. For now, Clubhouse is only available for iPhone users.
Clubhouse so far has garnered over 2.4 million downloads on Apple’s App Store globally. According to Sensor Tower data cited by AdWeek, nearly 1.3 million of those downloads took place in January this year. In India, it recorded over 8,000 downloads last month and has witnessed a total of 12,000 downloads, as per Sensor Tower. Its investors revealed in a new report that Clubhouse was valued at $1 billion.
Recently, the Clubhouse app was banned in China after it became increasingly popular among users. As per TechCrunch, users reported inside WeChat groups that they could no longer access the app. The app is unlikely to make a comeback in China because, in order to comply with Chinese internet regulation, It will have to go through a lot of changes.
